Breeding season has commenced.

Usually, I’m one of the last farms of the year breeding.  Mostly because I like foals to be born when there is grass and no mud, but also because I usually have a lump sum of money coming in September.  Last year, we were still working on getting mares pregnant in September.  It didn’t happen, so this year I decided to start a bit earlier.

Also, I bought a breeding from the lovely AT stallion Gerald, who will start showing in late March, so we’re hoping to get the mare in foal before then.

And the lucky mare:

Aishet, aka Aya, with her 2016 Gallo filly, Anahita.

This expected foal should be big and very sporty.  Fingers crossed Aya cooperates this year!

Then, I usually breed my 3 year old fillies, do a very little bit under saddle in their 3 year old year (just very limited basics), and then let them foal and hang out until late 4, when we start under saddle work nice and slowly.  Alamet is going to be 3 this year, so she had her first repro visit (which did NOT impress her) along with Aya.

I will be breeding her to Salam.

This was when she was a long yearling.  A year later and yes, she is covered in mud.

Her baby daddy. We expect to be inseminating her later this week.  Then, it’s a 2 week wait to see if she cooperated.  THEN, it’s an 11 month wait for the foal.

I have 2 more mares I will breed this year, but those will be a bit later.

Wish me luck!
