American Pharoah won the Triple Crown! Woo hoo, very exciting. I can remember Secretariat’s Triple Crown and still have a book of clippings somewhere.
But, here at Cascade Gold, we have a slightly different kind of race going on right now – a very slow one.
Aya (Aishet) looking quite stout.
I have two mares that are due right around the same time. One was due June 6th (it’s now the 9th) and the other is due June 27th, but foaled 20 days early last time. Both mares are bagged up and show other signs of foaling.
The one due on June 27th (Allie) was rolling and rolling the other day -often a sign the mare is getting the foal into ‘race’ position. She has a pretty good udder, but no colostrum yet. But, last time, she foaled without warning when I went to the store, no udder to speak of, no rolling etc.
The mare due June 6th (Aya) is bagged up, has colostrum and has some wax (colostrum dripping from her udder). She is obviously having some contractions and I spent yesterday watching her.
My husband bought a wireless camera for me, so I don’t have to trot out to the barn every two hours. It is great, I just roll over, check the video on my cell phone and go back to sleep.
So, now we have a ‘horse race’. I think you could stretch the meaning of handicapping to both mare’s particulars for foaling. (OK, that really is stretching it!)
I suspect we will have at least one foal today or tonight (or not, up to them!) with another to follow fairly quickly.
Who will be the winner?
(Me!)
